Laundry is one of those necessary chores everyone must do, but few people enjoy it. It can be time-consuming and frustrating, especially if you don’t have a system. But it doesn’t have to be that way! In fact, with a few simple tips, you can make laundry day a breeze.

1. Sort your laundry as soon as you take it off

Laundry sorting is probably the most important step in doing laundry efficiently. If you wait until laundry day to sort your clothes, you will be stuck with a huge pile to sort through. So, as soon as you take your clothes off, sort them into piles based on colour and fabric type. For instance, you might have a pile for white clothes, a pile for dark clothes, and a pile for delicates.

2. Pretreat stains

Pretreating stains is key to getting them out in the wash. Otherwise, they’re likely to set and become permanent. Some stains are tougher than others, but a few common pretreatment methods work well on most stains. For instance, pretreat with dish soap for greasy stains, like makeup or food. Apply a small dish soap to the stain and rub it in. Then, throw the item in the wash as usual. For protein-based stains, like blood or sweat, pretreat with hydrogen peroxide. Just apply a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to the stain and rub it in. Then, throw the item in the wash as usual.

3. Do laundry frequently

Frequent laundry days might not be your favourite, but they’re more efficient than doing one big laundry day each week. That’s because the sooner you wash your clothes, the less time the stains have to set. You can start a laundromat – like system in your home by designating certain days of the week for certain types of laundry. For instance, you might do all your white clothes on Mondays, all your dark clothes on Tuesdays, and so on.

4. Invest in divided hampers

Sorting your laundry is a lot easier when you have divided hampers. These are hampers that have separate compartments for different types of clothes. For instance, you might have one compartment for whites, one for darks, and one for delicates. You can toss your clothes in the hamper without sorting them.

5. Use the correct detergent

Using the correct detergent is important for cleaning your clothes and keeping them looking new. Make sure to read the labels on your clothes before you wash them to see what kind of detergent they recommend. Generally, there are three main types of detergent: powder, liquid, and gel. Powder detergent is the most common and is typically used for washing machine laundry. Liquid detergent is less common and is typically used for hand-washing delicate items. Gel detergent is the least common and is typically used for dirty or greasy clothes.

6. Use the correct water temperature

Water temperature is another important factor in getting your clothes clean. Generally, you want to use the hottest water that is safe for the fabric of your clothes. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. For instance, if you’re washing delicate items, you’ll want to use cooler water to prevent them from shrinking or getting damaged.

7. Don’t overstuff your washing machine

It might seem like a good idea to cram as many clothes into your washing machine as possible to save time. However, this is a bad idea. That’s because your washing machine is too full, your clothes won’t get as clean. Plus, overstuffing can damage your washing machine. So, it’s best only to put in as many clothes as your washing machine can handle.

8. Involve kids by using colour-coding

If you have kids, involve them in the laundry process using colour coding. This is a system where each family member has a specific colour of laundry detergent that they use. That way, when it’s time to sort the laundry, everyone knows whose clothes are whose. This can also help teach kids about the importance of sorting laundry properly.

These are just a few tips to help you organise your laundry room. By following these tips, you can make doing laundry a lot easier and less time-consuming. Also, your clothes will come out looking cleaner and brighter. So, there’s no reason not to give these tips a try.
