Arthritis is a condition wherein individuals suffer tenderness of one or more joints and its symptoms are pain and stiffness of the joints. The condition becomes worse with age. Severely arthritic hips often need to be replaced with artificial implants and the process for this is known as hip replacement.

Though hip replacement is an effective solution, it must be understood that it is not as durable as the original hip. It will suffer wear and tear and have an average life of around 20 years. Those made of special material may last somewhat longer. Several factors affect the life of the artificial hip and it could wear out faster or slower depending on these. Some of these factors are:

    1. The Material of the Implant

The material used to recreate the hip joint wears out over time depending on its quality and the usage of the joint after the implant. There are common implants and special implants, which have a cost factor attached. The materials used for hip replacement surgery in Delhi could be plastic, metal or ceramic.

2.The Size of the Bearing Surface

The ball and socket joint comes in different sizes and this also affects the movement and hence the life of the implant. Manufacturers are trying to create better implants to ensure a longer life

    3.Complications Post Surgery

Certain pre-existing medical conditions like osteoporosis or post-surgery treatments can lead to the joint being impacted. Any invasive procedure undertaken could need a course of antibiotics to prevent an infection of the joint.

    4.Age of the Patient

Younger people lead an active lifestyle and if they require a hip replacement, the implant is likely to wear out faster than the ones used in older people. They could need to go for another hip replacement.

    5.The Lifestyle of the Patients

Certain activities cause the implant to wear out faster as they tend to overexert the joints. They need not be difficult or painful. Some such activities are jogging, jumping and engaging in a contact sport. Safer activities include swimming, badminton, golf, rowing etc.

    6. Weight of the Patient

The implant in a heavier patient is likely to wear out faster than that in a lighter patient. Thus, managing the weight becomes very important for the patients. An appropriate exercising routine must be followed for the same.

    7. Lack of Regular Check-ups

Once you have had a hip implant procedure, it is important to go for regular check-up sessions with your doctor. This helps to find complications of any kind at an early stage.

    8. Technology

With advancements in technology, the joint replacements have been endowed with longer life. The life of the implant could very well depend on the technology used to carry out the replacement.

The overall life of the hip replacement surgery in Delhi is hence a factor of the patient’s condition and maintenance just as much as the technical aspects of the surgery. The life of the implant can be improved by making the right decisions at the time of surgery and adopting some lifestyle changes to minimise the wear and tear.
