Atomic Robo, KOD, & Boston

The Boston Comic Con was this weekend, and it was awesome. Saturday was busy to the point of being overwhelming, and Sunday brought a steady stream of people to the show right up until the end. I did a large number of sketches, (if I can get more than one emailed to me I’ll post them all up here), and the Robo TPBs were in hot demand. I also blew through my small supply of KoD and I was as happy as ever that people seem to be responding very positively to it.

On Saturday I ate tendon at a Korean joint. It was fascinating. But I wouldn’t recommend it to those with a weak stomach. Tendon is sort of like the jello of the meat world. I think dinner lasted about three hours and it was fantastic. The shady as fuck Irish bar we “pre-gamed” at was frightening but fun too. It was great seeing everybody!

Killer of Demons #2 just hit stores. Comics Should Be Good has this to say: “Killer of Demons #2- I have to give Yost and Wegener credit here; they have some serious balls to kill off the Brittney Spears inspired satanic stripper school girl assassin in one appearance. With some tweaking, you could make a franchise out of that character design alone. Two issues down this remains a fun comic and, depending on where the last issue goes, I’d love to see more of this series.”

You can also check a few more KOD reviews at Living Between Wednesdays, and 1.21 Jigga Whatts -scroll down a bit at each site.

I’m kicking it into high gear with Atomic Robo. AR3.1 comes out this month which means I’m going to have to haul ass to keep it on schedule. Before I was asked to do this Human Torch one-shot for Marvel I was waaaaaayyy ahead of the power-curve on Robo. But now that I’ve lost a month and a half I’ll be back to my usual “I can just run on coffee and power bars for a few months” schedule. However, barring meteor strikes or the unforeseen amputation of my almost-an-Eisner-hand, Team Robo will deliver the goods on time.

While you wait for Volume 3 to come out, why not pick up this handsome Atomic Robo poster.

For the more digitally oriented among you, Atomic Robo Vol.1 Issue #5 is now out on the iPone.

Manly Man Thing Jeff Powell has posted some preview pages of Robo 3.1 to his very excellent website.

And Brian Clevinger has overhauled Nuklearpower.com to start featuring some Robo stories, as well as his long running 8-Bit Theater, and one of his new projects, Warbot in Accounting.

One last final bit of Atomic Robo news. Industry veteran Mark McKenna will be inking the cover of Robo Vol.3.5. Mark has worked on too many books to even list. Suffice to say, the fact that he wanted to ink something Robo-related at all blew my mind.

And now I’m off. Atomic Robo is calling.

I don’t know where this came from, but it’s pretty neato!

The Human torch takes a refreshing acid bath. I am really digging on Ronda’s coloring work on this comic, and we’ll be bringing some of this to our new approach to Atomic Robo in Volume 4.

I know almost nothing about the fantastic four since I have never read any of their books, but why does the torch seem so….robotic?

There was a WW2-era android Human Torch that I think pre-dates Marvel Comics. Nothing to do with Lee & Kirby’s 60’s FF at all.

ScottApril 6th, 2009 at 5:13 pm

Yeah the Golden Age Torch was an android. Sort of like the Vision. Back in the old Atlas and Timely Comics days. I believe he was the first real superhero.

He spends a good deal of this one-shot with his skin boiled off. It’s fun.

“Flaming Action.”

TetsuboApril 6th, 2009 at 7:03 pm

Yeah, I saw the ‘flaming action’ line and I thought, “Scott is doing gay porn?”

Chris YostApril 6th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

God damn, dude. That Torch splash is awesome.

ReillyApril 6th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

I love that poster/cover for the torch book! Great seeing ya Scott. It’s rare that we see each other at shows or have the opportunity to hangout. I had a good time at the show despite the funk I was in for awhile during it….I dunno. Maybe I’m gettin to old for this shit? hahaha Tell the wifey and kid I said hey.

Android Torch actually has a great history, with his body being used to create the Vision, then not because he appeared in West Coast, then yes again because of something else… he’s a cool character. All the greatness of the Human Torch’s powers with none of the crap that comes with being Johnny Storm.

“The shady as fuck Irish bar we “pre-gamed” at was frightening but fun too”. Oh man, I freakin’ love Boston, looking forward to seeing you at free comic book day, Go Sox!

Nice colours by Ronda…refresh my memory: is the Torch project you NOT inking yourself or that’s to come later. Looks like yer inking.

Pass the tendon…

ScottApril 7th, 2009 at 10:56 am

That is me not inking. Or “inking” in graphite.

I still rough it out in blue-line but where I would use inks I just use regular pencil. It keeps things very tight and clean. Then Ronda puts a ‘color-hold’ on the graphite to turn in brown (or whatever color we think will look best for that page/issue).

Is it me, or are “us orphans of aviation” the only people that use “behind the power-curve” in real life conversation? I said the same last week and got a “what the eff is a power curve?” — I tried explaining it and the “bucket” and their ears started bleeding.

Diggin the Torch poster thingy too… it would go nicely on my wall of Ruskie propaganda posters in mah office.

j_ayApril 8th, 2009 at 3:15 am

Ah, cool. Thanks for explainin’. Looks great.

When you first mentioend it i was fearing something like the ‘digital painting’ just dominating the linework (ala Isonove (or whatever his name is), which I reallllllllllllly don’t dig.

I’m pleased I have nothing to fear for future SW comics.

ScottApril 8th, 2009 at 6:32 am

That TORCH poster - I would like it. If the flames on his head weren’t going the wrong way.

Ryan -Yeah I have a wonkie window in my car that won’t shut properly at high speeds and I was explaining it to some friends (while wrestling with a window at 80 mph zipping through Boston. I started talking about Bernuli and static vs dynamic pressure, and the relative pressure in side the car vs the pressure outside and . . .yeah.

They had no idea what I was talking about.

I usually just start talking about Special Relativity with Clevinger when I want to feel far stupider than I am.

Jay -Ronda is the master (mistress?) of subtle. When we try this with Robo it won’t look quite like this -because in Torch we are going for a sort of sepia feel. But it will be similar.

ColinApril 8th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Glad you enjoyed the show, Scott. Shame I had to miss it.

Dave W.April 10th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Actually Scott, the thing with the flames moving forward is totally plausible. You see the Torch is pushing a bulge of air ahead of him, which moves in a mushroom shaped cone around his head, like a bullet, but then after the now downward facing air reaches his neck it hits a wall of resistance, causing a zone of suction with a force greater than that of the force caused by his forward motion through the air, like behind a semi truck on the highway, except that the smooth contour at the back of his head will allow that air to travel forward, at times this reverse suction will cause an acceleration greater than the acceleration caused by his displacement of the air ahead of him, creating the occasional blow-back, or back-draft, thus shooting flame forward, while the Torch travels through the stratosphere.
Excelsior! (Insert Geek accent with overly pronounced lisp due to head gear; should read — Eksshellsshior!)

ScottApril 10th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Are you seriously going to talk aerodynamics with me? Seriously.

I’m just gonna say your wrong, and leave it at that.

Oh, when you come up next week, bring a stud finder. (this has nothing to do with any “flaming action”.)

TetsuboApril 11th, 2009 at 4:51 am

I thought Scott didn’t need a stud finder…

Brian M.April 18th, 2009 at 11:18 am

Love the Torch cover and looking forward to checking out your work on the Human Torch.

ScottApril 19th, 2009 at 6:21 am

I didn’t do the Torch cover. :P

But thanks!
