I Heart Comi . . .Waitaminute!
Well NYCC is over and I’m glad to be home. As always after a con, my studio is acting as a satellite campus for the Betty Ford Clinic. I used to try and get right back to work after a con, but experience has taught me that this is pointless. Cons are a lot of work (and yes fun), and you really need a day to recover -especially with the 6 hour car ride last night. So I’m just going to sit here and detox if that’s okay.
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner Robot 6 (over on CBR) has resurrected the “I HEART COMICS” series. And in one of those ironic little twists that just make me laugh, they asked me to write one of the opening articles. Because, as you all know, there are two things I “love”, and they are comics and stupid fakie Hallmark holidays.
I was fairly rushed in writing it, but I think it came out okay. A week later though I am thinking that I could have done better or taken a different angle. Luckily I have a blog. So at some point I’ll get to that.
NYCC was pretty decent. I want to say it was awesome, but it was more “meh”. This year was an experiment of sorts involving me, my art rep, and some of the other artists he works with. It was chaotic as hell and my pages took a real beating, but it was fun. When I was sitting down at the table it was fantastic having Bob and Kim from ComicArtHouse handling the money and the details. Business was booming and I met tons of Robo fans. I had half the pages with me listed at $20 or less (and half of that half at $10), and that was a big hit. I just need to sit at the table all day next year, not have to pack my stuff up every day, and have enough space to not be sitting thigh-to-thigh with the guy next to me. But I knew it was going to be like that, so I’m not complaining. I’m just saying it blew about as bad as I figured it would. Luckily Bob and Kim, and the guys and gals they represent are good people. So it was kind of like being stuck in an elevator, but with people whose company you enjoy. If that makes any sense.
Friday we took it easy, deciding not to hit the town, but instead to grab some Chinese take-out and watch Tropic-Thunder. TF was hysterical. I can see how it offended several demographics on several levels, and frankly I didn’t care. TF was a variation on a convention tradition that sort of kept happening by accident last year. We would get back to our hotel rooms for a little pre-drinking drinking and there would be a Schwartzenegger movie on -Predator, True Lies, and so forth. Basically, good friends, a few drinks, and some first class terrible acting and you are in business.
Saturday was party night and I hit a few. And I think for the most part I’m done with them. You go to these parties hoping to meet new people, do a little networking, and get shit faced on the cheap if you’re lucky. The last part is easy enough, but the rest is tricky. In my experience people just break off into their familiar cliques or hang out with the people they work with and are not so interested in socializing with new people. Things are usually loud and crowded and sort of boring, in a socially awkward kind of way.
Not that I didn’t meet a few new people and they were nice. But overall I think I’ll take Chinese and a movie with my buds from now on.
I wrapped up the con on Sunday with a reunion and some shopping. I briefly got to see a dear old friend who I haven’t seen in ten years or so. We only snatched a few minutes -my table was busy and she had her young kids in tow. But it was a lovely few minutes. =)
I also got my shopping for Dorinda and the Widget done with the help of my pal Lauren. Lucky for me Lauren lives in Boston, so she kept me awake and semi-lucid for most of the ride home. The Widget is on a HUGE DOCTOR WHO kick. She’s blasted through all the new stuff and had her first exposure to Tom Baker’s version of the Doctor this weekend while I was away. Dorinda said it was well received. So I bought her a “Sonic Screwdriver” which came with “psychic paper”, and a “Doctor Who in Your Pocket” key chain that blurts out all the Cybermen and Dilek catch phrases. I wasn’t originally going to buy her the Screwdriver since it wasn’t cheap -I was going to buy it for myself (dorkdorkdork!). But I knew it would disappear from my desk within seconds, so I got us both one.

The Eleventh Doctor

FRZZZEEERRKKKK!

RANDOM SPLENDOR

Hey Scott, it was cool seeing you bro. I will have to admit as a collector of art I was ecstatic to nab some of your pages at amazingly low price. Feel good in the knowledge that I’m saving these suckers for when the third Atomic Robo Film comes out- Cash money baby - LOL
But seriously, the pages have found a home next to Herb Trimpe’s Shogun Warrior pages in my portfolio and nothing short of me and Crystal being ass broke and living under a bridge , will I ever consider selling them. I really love your style and know that you and Brian are on the cusp of really exploding out there.
I just read that there is going to be a “YoungBlood” movie- really.
I respond to that knowledge that we all who are artisans, respecting the art form that taught us so much as kids. Must continue believing in the true fundamentals that built this empire and never let fall.
peace
I agree with you by the way- stick to the hotel, friends and a movie (much more enjoyable)
That was a good article on Robot 6. It’s pretty wild that you interned at Marvel. Good times or pain in the ass?
Frankie - Yo man, awesome to see you. Where was Crystal btw?
YoungBlood? Seriously?
Josh -thanks. Yeah Marvel was fun. Nice people and all that. the only sucky part was the commute from Staten Island. I think it was about two hours each way -long walk, bus, ferry, subway. It was much better than having to go to school though! lol

Scott,
Was good to see you, if only briefly. We’ll get to hangout more when I come to do the Boston Comic Con show. Jenna and I didn’t party at all this weekend. It was dinner and then sleep. I had talked to so many people each day and since I was crammed in at Artist Alley and wasn’t able to leave the table, I was exhausted. I think I had a meer 3 beers the entire weekend, which is unusual for an irishman. Anyways, glad to hear that the con was somewhat okay for you. About the same for me. See you in 2 months!
You’ll like the Boston show, Rob. It’s not huge at all but it’s really nice. They do a good job of advertising outside of normal comic book channels and I’ve always felt like I get a good mix of people at my table.
sweet!
Crystal sat out this round. I’m really hoping to get my comic book project going. I met up with the writer at NYCC and he’s going through a lot of personal stuff
Me and the Colorist/Letterer are ready to get moving but we can’t move without a story. The writer has till March 1st to either have something or not. If not the comic book concept is dead.
On another note, I really hated being on the other side of the table.
When I saw you and many other artist buds- I felt a deep ache inside.
I’ve been behind the table many times in the past- drawing and talking to fans and that is where I get the “rush”.
I love it bro and I need to feel that again.
Also it allowed me more time to reconnect with fellow artisans like yourself and others before the show and after.
I really hope that this comic book project happens for me- It’s a great story and I’m hungry to draw.
I’ll let you know how it pans out.
peace
“In 800yds turn left, then left. Noncompliance will not be tolerated.”
Had a great time geeking and hanging out, even if it was brief.
I am still scared of your car gps.
Yes! Boston Con! I am planning on going in April, and hopefully bringing a posse with me. It’s a pretty fun little show, but as we both know the best thing about that show are the bathrooms. Like nothing I’ve ever seen. I still tell tales of them to nonbelievers.
It’s two days long this year Alec (just FYI).
It will be awesome to see you again. Mic. . . .Mik . . .er, is your girlfriend coming too, (whose name I can totally say but now spell!)?
Lets meet in the bathrooms -but no foot tapping. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I just don;t roll that way.
Which is a loss for men the world over.
Hahah Michaela… yeah, she’s planning on coming along too. We’ll have to come up with a new absurd thing for you to draw for us.
And, luckily for us, the amazing bathrooms have those amazing lounge areas with the amazing couches in them, so we CAN meet in the bathroom without worry or concern of an unwelcome foot tapping incident. Rock.
