Welcome To The 17th Century. How May We Serve?

As you may have heard, we had a bit of an ice storm this weekend. I often complain about the winters in New Hampshire, but after 27 hours without heat, hot water, or electricity, and freezing temperatures outside (and eventually inside as well), I’ve discovered a whole new level of hate for New England in the wintertime.

There is a quick little video here that gives you an idea of what things are like. thousands of people are still without power and all sorts of shelters are being opened. We are actually very lucky. Several of our friends in other towns still have no power or heat. It could be several more days before they get it back, and its easily cold enough outside (and indoors now) to kill you.

Thank god for the Red Arrow Diner! Somehow their little chunk of town kept its power and we spend a good deal of time there. By this morning we were on a first name basis with many of the other repeat visitors, and we chatted away as we stood stuffed along one wall waiting for tables to open up.

I was just beginning the hunt by flashlight in our dark -and freezing- attic for a suitcase, and getting ready to call my mom down in New York to tell her we would be coming down early for Christmas, when the lights suddenly came on.

Hot showers all around.

At one point on Saturday I opened the fridge to see if anything was going bad when I realized that it was warmer in the refrigerator than it was in the kitchen. With power restored, my studio/laundry room is back to its normal balmy 61 degrees, but at least now I know that I’m shivering because I’m poor and can’t afford to turn up the thermostat, and not because the boiler isn’t turned on.

Our quasi-bosses at Red5 Comics are in the news this week. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am dying to see their new title DRONE.

Oh hey, Killer of Demons. I know this broke a little early in the comments section of lat week’s blog. But for those who don’t read the comments, check it out.

RANDOM SPLENDOR

-It’s nice to see the old hometown in the news.

-Lockheed Martin’s Multiple Kill Vehicle. Because sometimes being way over-complicated and cool far outweighs just getting the job done.

-This arrived the other day. My wardrobe is now complete.
-in the future, Japan’s population will decrease by 2/3. Thus, all robot babies are needed. Seriously though, decreasing populations are a good thing. there should be a limit of one per couple, and a written test before you’re allowed to stop taking birth control. And income verification. And a shit load of other stuff.

Fuck you Big Three. Just Fuck You.

Thank You Dark Roasted Blend, for helping me out when I had no other images for Random Splendor. All of this awesome shit come from my favorite website. It updates just about daily with all sorts of fun shit.

Man, a lot of stuff looks like smiley faces. Anywho, I’m glad you got your power back. Here in England, we were flooded last year, and the floodwater managed to contaminate all the other water, so despite some parts of the country being submerged, we could not use our fawcets. I thought that tied in nicely with your refrigerator story.

Ugh I got off lucky, and only lost it for about 14 hours, but a lot of people I knew were without and still don’t have it. I swear there are no D batteries left in the tri-county area, it was just huge. When I went into Wal-Mart it was like… (Its strange how it didn’t really hit me till I saw this) There was a massive dent in the shelves that I’d never seen before… breads, cereals, snacks and definitely water were desecrated and I am sure they sold their fair share of Generators too… but had a heck of a time trying to find the gas for em. Lines were three hours plus long at EMPTY gas stations on Friday.

I can’t say I really suffered, I slept through most of it… but damn, I almost kind of feel bad for being one of the lucky ones.

Thankfully there isn’t a death toll yet… I mean, so far as I know only one man passed after starting his generator, but I haven’t heard of anyone else. I’ve never seen so many utility trucks at once… they’re coming from as far away as Indiana.

Killer of Demons looks to be a fun time, and I’ll definitely be checking that one out. Everything I’ve seen from Red 5 looks good, and I am going to hopefully follow any series they produce.

Another chilly winter here in Florida. I might have to close the windows tonight! Brrrr!

Wilton JeffDecember 15th, 2008 at 11:08 am

Still without power up the hill here in Wilton. The PSNH (electric utility for out-of-staters) PR guy gave a soundbite specifically about the “devastation” in Wilton which even got broadcast on the BBC, so I’m not hopeful we’ll get power back any time soon.

Thank gawd for the wood stove to keep the house warm, but no running water (hot OR cold, thanks to the electric well pump) is getting old…

We had fun here in the midwest as well. It was 46 here yesterday, then the rain started, at about 9pm the cold front moved through. The temperature dropped to 7 degrees by 2am and wind chills made it 33 below zero. I was readt for a glaze of ice, but the winds evaporated every trace, save the large ice puddles. We were spared the fate of the northeast.

Get warmer soon and I look forward to KOD. Looks fun!

You know Brian, I really HATE you… which explains why I read almost everything you put out… I keep tabs on the people I hate, but spending money on their creations and keeping their egos afloat by reading and recommending their stuff..

Red Arrow Diner: Best place for a late night drunken refuge, and the only place one can get smiley fries at 3 am

TysonDecember 16th, 2008 at 11:32 am

If the world was blown up and I could only choose one restaurant to save and eat at for the rest of my natural life, the Red Arrow Diner would be it I think.

And now they opened a new place in Milford just 5 minutes away from me, so score.

Oh, and we had power out for almost 3 days. Came back Sunday evening. Pretty lucky considering there was a enormous effing tree that took out the end of our street.

ScottDecember 16th, 2008 at 11:57 am

Jeff- Still no power? Yikes! I thought you guys might be close enough to the downtown area to get it back sooner.

And yay for Town Water -We didn’t lose that. There was just enough hot water left in the tank for me to take a really, really quick shower. I haven’t bathed that quickly since Boot Camp!

Of course, stepping out of the shower into the freezing bathroom was not a pleasant experience at all.

Tyson -yeah, the new Arrow is where its at. I loved it when it was just a regular diner, though it kept the same crap hours as all the other placed on the Milford Oval.

To have a 24hr joint within five minutes of home, almost -well okay not even close- makes up for the lose of Santos Dumont.

The Red Arrow is wonderful mostly because it is terrible. It is your standard crap diner food, and your standard dirt cheap prices. And it is the only 24hr ANYTHING with in 50 minutes of my house.

so if I work into the night and just feel a need to go somewhere, I now can. And it’s not the Mega Wal-Mart anymore. :)

Brian- give us a ring in hurricane season.

I won’t be able to then!

Wilton JeffDecember 18th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Would you believe still no power? Tonight will be a full week without.

Apparently several hundred Wilton families are in the same boat, according to PSNH’s numbers.

NickDecember 18th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Well, there is talk that it should all be on by next week.. hopefully you’ll get it back this weekend, they’re working very hard from what I hear.

ScottDecember 18th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Wow Jeff, that really sucks.

and yes, they are working like mad to get the power back -crews from out of state are being bunked at a gym in the next town over.

one complaint though: I’m driving down the road, and I stop because there is a PSNH truck in my lane . . .and some electrician’s truck parked next to it, in the other lane.

For five fucking minutes. It took two more cars behind me, and several coming in the other direction to finally get the electrician asshole to move his truck.

I would have had all sorts of creative suggestions for the road crew as I finally drove by, if I wasn’t so appreciative of the work they are doing.

As of this morning a friend of my Father’s still doesn’t have power. Their house is 40 degrees at the moment and falling. They don’t know if their pipes will survive. They are trying to get their hands on a generator.

NickDecember 20th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Dude that sucks… And what sucks even more is this snow storm, it can’t be helping them any. I hope they manage to get one dude. If I had one I’d try to hook you up.

New look for the blog Scott? Or did the customization blow up?

ScottDecember 21st, 2008 at 10:48 am

Yay. Its snowing again.

And the website is a work in progress.

Jessie LamDecember 21st, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Wow.. The new blog theme colours are so…. DeviantArt.

ScottDecember 22nd, 2008 at 7:04 am

I think that’s why the theme is called “DevArt”, hehe
