and men want to be him...

I Have No Point

I  must admit that I’m at a bit of a loss for this week’s blog. The Robert Kirkman thing didn’t exactly inspire the conversation I was hoping for, and that’s left me feeling a little uncertain.

Luckily, my friend Ryan sent me this. I met Ryan back in college and was delighted to find out a year or two ago that he also is a closet geek, like me. We both attended a very small, conservative, college in New Hampshire whose claim to fame, (if it can be called that), is it’s professional flight course. I know most people out there still think that most professional pilots come from the military, but in reality they come from a handful of colleges and accredited flight schools.

The silk scarfs and leather flying goggles that made me fall in love with aviation are long gone, replaced by silly hats and long lines to get through airport security. Ryan, however, has found a way to keep that old romance of the air alive with his website, Tatoos in Flight. It’s really cool, and you guys should take a minute to check it out.

Speaking of websites -man I wish I could get this place remodeled! But my latest web-maven, Lindsay Small, and her bo, have had a really great opportunity come their way and probably won’t have any time to complete the really awesome redesign concept they helped me come up with. Oh well. Someday. LOL I’m not sure what I can say about this project of theirs, but when I get the green light I will fill you all in. Lindsay’s boyfriend Alex is the dude who did that cool animation of running-Robo.

This past week is something of a blur. I’m still working feverishly at Robo, but this week I moved into Issue 2.5, and I’m feeling really good about it. 2.3 and 2.4 took forever to get done because they were constantly interrupted by conventions and family trips. They became a real drag to work on. Which sucks, because I am so into The Sparrow -drawing her should have been fun, not stressful. But now we are wrapping Vol.2 up and the last issue is a one-shot that features a British commando loosely based on my grandfather, who served in the British Army during WWII. It’s a lot of fun. Plus, Robo is more fucked up than he has ever been before. A couple of people who have seen the cover were a little freaked out by it.

Speaking of Robo, I’ve got some new reviews to share:

-The Kid’s Comic Book Reviews. Robo gets feedback from that critical 6-9yr old demographic. This is probably the best Atomic Robo review ever writen.

- The Comics Bulletin.

-Ain’t It Cool News.

-Kleefeld on Comics.

-Geeks of Doom.

I did take a break from Robo yesterday so that Dorinda and I could motor on down to Boston to hang with friends. We had a wonderful time. It was sooooo relaxing and I ate lots of stuff that I’m not supposed to eat anymore. Yay for spicy Italian sausage! As always, trips like this leave me pining for city life. It dawned on me last week, as I ran a Northern exposure Marathon to keep me going while I worked, that Wilton New Hampshire is a lot like Cicely Alaska -but without the charmingly eccentric cast of character. Still, Wilton has it’s perks. But there’s no public transit system, and the list of “interesting things to see and do” can be counted on one hand.

Some day Emma will be older, I won’t be babysitting an 81yr old father-in-law, and we can get the funk outta Dodge.

RANDOM SPLENDOR

-Oktapodi!

-Curta Mechanical Calculator. My GOD, I want one!

Hey check it out! This is the design for the new Atomic Robo T-shirt, available at a comic convention near you.

Looks like atomic-robo.com took all of the opinions about the Kirkman thing.

Do you have a link to the Robo running animation? This is the first I’ve heard of it. And do you know if that t-shirt will be available via Secret Bunker, like the others?

  2. Tetsubo Said:

Why would Wilton *need* a public transportation system? You can walk the entire downtown in under an hour, going there and back.

Have any of those Ts in an XL? :)

  3. Ryan Keough Said:

Ah, but Wilton DID have a public transportation system — that, um, transported blue hair wimmen folk and men named Murray, to see… leaves, I think. The famous “Wilton Scenic Railroad” — then Mr. Draper died and the train went away too.

  4. Nick Said:

Zack Frinfrock is totally doing Atomic Robo beating Superman.. with the Power of Science!

    Love your stuff dude!

  5. Scott Said:

Josh -Yeah Robo.com did steal all the comments. :)

I used to have a link to that bit of Robo animation . . .but I can’t find it. If you hunt through the blog archives you will find it though.

Tetsubo -I didn’t say Wilton needed a PTS. I said that I would like to live somewhere that had one. Like Boston, or Toronto (I love Toronto).

T-shirts: I don’t have any. But if you go to the Secret Bunker or comicarthouse.com you can get one.

Ryan -off! I took Widget on the “scenic” railroad once. What a total waste of money. It was awful.

Nick -I check in on Zack through out the course of the day. It was fun. He was looking pretty bushed by the time I went to bed. :)

  6. Nick Said:

Yeah… Im glad he made it through though. That took a lot of guts. And caffiene

I think his Robo Picture turned out pretty good. And all of the art he produced was of High Quality.

New T-shirt rocks by the way. Am I going to assume you and Brian take a break from Robo after this mini, or is there a third already planned?

Oh and I agree about the best review ever. The kids got chops!

  7. Scott Said:

We’ve got the next 3 minis sort of figured out. Brian is scripting Vol.3 while I wrap up Vol.2.

There will be a break for you guys between mini-series, but it keeps us busy 6 days a week, 10 hours a day.

  8. Nick Said:

Yeouch. I thought working 10 hours a day, for four days was rough.

I would have likely cracked a long time ago.

  9. Tetsubo Said:

Scott is made of sterner stuff!

Or he is already insane. Which works out nicely actually.

  10. Scott Said:

There are days when I want to pull my hair out, and my hand and back hurt all the time it seems.

But it’s sort of like getting paid to play video games or read books.

    It’s fun.

  11. Nick Said:

Well as long as you love doing it…

And as you keep doing it, I’ll keep being a fan. Cause we all know, its when the artist stops that we start hating them. Until they come along and draw something again…

It just occurred to me I might be spammingish. Sorry :P

  12. Nick Said:

That was supposed to be a joke >.>

  13. David Said:

I think that t-shirt is gonna make me feel like I am Atomic Robo. It will be hazardous to my health when I buy that t-shirt. Awesome job.
