Getcher War On

While Get your War On is the funniest webcomic in the world, that’s not what I’m talking about. Here are some examples of the fine work done by GYWO, I hope I don’t get sued for sharing with you.

There’s a progress report over at Atomic-Robo. Apparently there is at least one reviewer who is concerned that Robo is a one-trick pony, so Brian addresses the issue in his typically amusing way. But if Robo *is* a tad formulaic, aren’t all comic books or long-running stories? Consider it. When is the last time your looked at a comic and Batman didn’t fight crime? Or Peter Parker didn’t feel guilty? I mean really -give me a break.

Did everyone have a good Easter? I hope so. Of all the remixed, rewritten, and heavily edited holidays that are out there, Easter is my favorite. Not that trying to make the connection between Santa Claus and Jesus isn’t fun also.

But Easter has Zombie Jesus, and it just doesn’t get any better than that. He hauls himself out of the crypt to . . to what? Hide colored eggs and distribute chocolate bunnies? I mean –huh?!

Getting back to the Atomic Robo progress report –Goddamn am I behind schedule! Its my own, silly internal schedule that nobody else knows about, but still! I’ve got three more pages to go for Vol.2 #1 and before I start #2 I plan on sitting down with a calendar, and a convention schedule, and figuring out exactly what page I should be on, on which day, of what month.

I bought a portable DVD player this weekend –in keeping with my new holiday tradition of buying myself some sort of electronic gizmo whenever a major holiday rolls around.

For some reason my old laptop has never been any good at playing movies. No matter what program I use or how often I update the video drivers it always bogs down and then freezes. Not the entire computer –just the program. Anything else that may be running keeps on trucking. So I don’t think I’m running out of memory. I think I just ahve a shitty computer. Its a good thing I don’t do much digital art. :P

Anyway, now I’ve got a mini-laptop-looking thing on my desk and Widget can watch movies in the car the next time we visit Gran down in NYC. Speaking of Gran, she’s the reason I bought the DVD player in the first place.

Mom must have been reading the blog and purchased me Ken Burn’s recent PBS documentary: THE WAR. A little death and destruction to work by. It certainly keeps my head in the right place while drawing Robo beating on Nazis. I watched a lot of The War on the internet before the GREATEST video website ever (Stage 6.com) closed down. But now that option is gone. So thanks Mom! Its great –I’ve had nothing but Keith David’s mellow narrations and Wynton Marsalis tunes playing over WWII awfulness all weekend. Its bliss.

The only WWII series that’s is better than this was The World At War –narrated my Lawrence Olivier. (A lovely birthday gift btw . . .wink, wink, nudger, nudger.) It was a BBC production made in the early 1970’s. It was fantastic. Because many less people were dead who had lived through the war the firsthand stories were amazing. I enjoy the older series more only because Burns seems to make the same documentary over, and over, and over again. Civil War amazed me as a teenager. Then Came Baseball, then Jazz, and now this. And they are all basically the same. Play some sad music and move a camera across some grainy old photos while having Keith or some celebrity reader talk over it all.

Super work Ken, but if people think Atomic Robo is in danger of becoming a slave to a formula I hope to god they never review you work. LOL

That’s all for right now I guess. I’m sure some amazing Google Alert will arrive in ten minutes and I’ll be editing this.

But for now I leave you with another bit of fan art done by Alec –he and his girlfriend always come up with the wackiest sketch requests when I see them at shows. Robo vs dinosaurs, Robo vs giant squid, etc.

That’s right kids. Robo, a triceratop, and a Martian ON MARS. You’re fired Clevinger!

Oh yeah, and do you remember when I linked to Justin Stanley in the MegaCon post? Said he was the best dressed man at the show? Here he is and the sketch I did of him. Justin would make an AWESOME Atomic Robo villain.

I forget who the maker of this poster I stole, stole the redheaded girl from, but I;ve seen THAT guy’s site before too. Really great work. While I T&A in comic books that *claim* to be made for kids, I fully endorse T&A that comes right out and says; “Here, have to T&A.”

“Why thank you, I think I will.”

The site for the redhead is http://www.bawidamann.com. His stuff is amazing. Very reminice of WWII pin up girl art. He’s got a great cold war Russian cosmonaut girl piece too. Meeeowww!

The pinup guy you’re thinking of is Andrew Bawidamann: http://www.bawidamann.com/home.html His sexy Nazis kind of creep me out a little, but if I had a bitchin’ van I would totally want the sassy cosmonaut chick airbrushed on the side.

Thank you Citizen Wegener for the kind words. Although it was obvious that I was the best dressed and would indeed make a worthy adversary to the Atomic Robo I have been hearing so much about.

A Hello Kitty-style Darth Vader? What is the world coming to?!

Sweet job on the Justin Stanley sketch.

ScottMarch 24th, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Thanks Mark! Yeah that’s him. His feet are the only thing that bug me. They are usually super-deformed and gross me right out. But everything else is very awesome.

Jessie -this is just the beginning. Just wait for the Choco-Kitty Death Star.

I’ll thank you not to mock the shenanigans of our undead messiah.

Man, Justin’s got some serious Hellboy goin’ on.

Brian M.March 26th, 2008 at 11:38 am

Andrew is unabashedly a pin-up artist with not plans to do any comic work that I’ve ever heard.

JohnMarch 27th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Wow! That has got to be one of the, if not THE coolest comic dinos I’ve ever seen. That thing NEEDS to be a poster Scott! Everything about it is perfection. Don’t listen to those bogus, isolated “formulaic” charges about Robo. Brian’s retort is spot-on. Pretty soon we’ll all have Atomic Robo Special Collector’s Edition Blueray movies and carrying our peanut butter n’ fluff sandwiches in Robo lunch box(that guy will too!)

Oh, Tyrannosaurus Reich. Major Bummer was such a great book. I think I’ll take a moment of silence.
