Free Comic Book Day Info (Take Notes)

I know you guys are getting sick of these extra blog posts, but what I have planed for Monday is semi image intensive and silly. This, however, is very important.

Be sure to ask your comic shop to order the FCBD Atomic Robo comic! If they don’t order it, it won’t be available at your local shop on FCBD. Read more here: http://www.red5comics.com/?comic=19. Because Red5 Comics is a small fry in the great grease pit that is comics, we are a “Silver Sponsor” –which means that we are not Marvel or DC. This also means that you’d better email, phone, or visit your local shop and ask them to order Atomic Robo (& Friends) for FCBD 2008!

My man over at Gutter Bleed has a sharp eye. So far he is the first (that I know of) to pick up on our 1985 G.I. Joe cameo.

This is not exactly a review, but it’s a nice endorsement. Fists of Gravy = Delicious Wounds. I really wish Robo’s space capsule didn’t look like a can of whipped cream in this panel . . .

Our reviews from IGN have been sort of hit or miss since Robo #1 hit. But I think we are starting to get inside their heads a little. Atomic Robo #5 –This Generation’s Tick.

It is entirely possible that Kleefeld is a fucking genius.

Some of you may have noticed that Atomic Robo is selling for insane prices on Ebay. I saw a #1 up there for $50 last week –and God only knows what the angry bidders pushed it up to. But if you like FREE Atomic Robo you should check out the Free Comic Books blog. I only poked around a little, but if I got the basic idea it is this; this person will give you their comics for free. All they ask is that if you like them you then go purchase the books and help support the people making them.

I think this is a great idea. I don’t know if you’re getting a physical comic or a scan of one, but who cares. Comic book piracy can be a good thing. I believe it is a great way to expose people to good books that they might otherwise see, and some of those folks will then go spend money on these books. The people who only pirate comics because they don’t want to pay for them –well, these guys won’t spend money on you anyway, so who cares. Maybe they will tell a friend who will. And finally, scanned comics help save people from wasting their money on garbage like Aqua Man (which Robo outsells in 3 major NYC comic shops, BTW).

So is anyone else worried about the new Indiana Jones movie? I am. There was a time a few years ago when I would have gone ape shit with joy at the very idea. But we all saw what George Lucas did to our beloved Star Wars saga. Total soup sammich. And if there is one thing that I liked more than Star Wars growing up, it was Indiana Jones. Even though I hated all but the opening scenes of Temple of Doom, and Last Crusade was pretty damn corny, I still LOVE this trilogy.

When I first learned about the new movie it was just after watching an awful trailer for Stallone’s new Rambo movie, in which Viet Cong soldiers take over the nursing home he is living in . . .or something like that. So as you might expect, a little part of me died inside.

But after watching this new trailer for Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull I am feeling much better about everything. I might even forgive them for casting that donkey-rific kid from the Transformers “movie”. Though I suspect most of the terrible acting can be blamed on Michael Bay who seems to turn everything he touches into a superficial three hour long teaser trailer for the movie you really wish he’s made. I don’t even know if that makes sense, but its how I feel –which often makes no sense.

Speaking of things that are cool check out Batman: Gotham Knight. Batman, for me, is one of those characters that I love, yet I have never read more than a few Batman comic books –and I’ve rarely enjoyed them, except Pope’s Batman yr100. For me, Batman is that sole survivor of the great American Witch Trial that led to the creation of the Comic Book Code, the rise of superheroes, and the death of 99% of the masked vigilantes of the 1920’s and 1930’s. For me its always been about Bruce Tim and his reinvention of the classic Bat. I also love anime, so this is a double treat for me.

Sometimes my friend Tetsubo sends me way too much cool stuff. He’s like my own personal Google, except he goes looking for things that I didn’t know I wanted to look at. Not only did he send me the link to Batman, but also to Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield’s new project FreakAngels. Freakangels is a free weekly webcomic. Only unlike most webcomics it does not suck big raunchy nuts.

Note: Tetsubo also sent a link to the Indiana Jones trailer, but I found that earlier by myself. :)

I’ve got 2 shops (a local and not-so-local) that I can make sure and ask to order them. Sadly enough I can only get my Robo through online ordering (cause i guess the shops can’t afford to order the minimum count and not sell them) I live in a small town…nobody tries anything new. I can’t even get INVINCIBLE, I’ve gotta order that online too.

I don’t blame the shops….but it does blow.

Loved the cameos! Did a double-take when I came across them in the issue. The Robo team is doing some great work, and kudos to the lot of you!

I’ve just been reading your mind while you sleep. Frankly finding anything *other* then pron in there is mighty hard…

Matt -I’m calling shenanigans on this one.

Diamond minimum orders apply to the ENTIRE monthly order. Which those shops must be making or they would not have new product each month.

If ever shop were required to purchase $250 worth of Red5 books in order to get any, we would never have sold an issue. Or how would you ever order a back-issue?

Either those retailers are misinformed or they just don’t want to be bothered with you.

Either way, you seem better off getting your books on-line.

PS -I pulled that $250 amount out of the air. I don’t know what it really is.

Being new to comic books (via Atomic Robo, of course) I’m not sure how FCBD works… My local store owner assured me they’re getting plenty of the Robo/Neo issue, but will there be a chance for multiple copies? Or will I have to conscript friends to snag both a reading and a collecting copy?

Also, picked up #5 and was pleased to see how well the art advances the story. In 4 it kinda felt like the art was wrapped around the writing but #5 really stood out art-wise. Good work, as usual!

Cool beans! I have something coming out on FCBD myself. I’m inking Femme Noir:Dark City Diaries for Ape and we’re doing a 5 page story for their sampler. It’s cool enough to have something of my own coming out then, but now an Atomic Robo book too?!Hells yeah!

I am lucky enough to have an awesome shop where I live, and I ive in a small midwest town. I’ll be signing my story that day, but will definitely be pushing the Robo to the folks.

Can’t wait!

How did I not know the new series would be an ongoing before this? I must not be paying attention. Congratulations! And good luck!

Jessie LamFebruary 17th, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Shyte, I had no idea the shops still had to take orders for FCBD issues. I was under the impression everything that was submitted for the event was released in one huge big package for each retailer so no one would be left out. Ah well.

“On-going” isn’t quite right as it tends to imply “monthly” as in 12 issues per year. We are definitely not going to be a “monthly” title, as there will be a few months every year when we will not release comics. We are doing this to make sure that we never deliver a late product.

The wording will change in the print version of the image above to avoid confusion.

I’ve got to say, I actually really enjoyed the new Rambo. Maybe I’ve just got a soft spot for arrows shooting through people’s heads. I’ve only seen First Blood and not 2 or 3, maybe those would have soured me on the franchise a little more.

Lucas’ involvement in Indy is what concerns me the most. Sometimes I think he’s out to prove that there is no beloved franchise we may possess memories of which he cannot take away from us.

ScottFebruary 18th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

What always freaked me out most about Lucas was how much he and my Dad looked alike. They were the same age, and their childhoods seemed to be very similar -if American Graffiti can be used as any sort of barometer here. My Dad was even a sci-fi geek too.

I don’t know where I’m going with this. Except perhaps to the nearest psychotherapist.
