Snow Emergency Blog!
I guess the conservative ostridges who think that Al Gore will just go away if they wish really hard were right! Amazing. Apparently Global Climate Change is busted in New England. This is storm #6,076,465,063 of the winter.
I tired to shovel but it was literally filling in the driveway behind me as I worked. So the Widget and I went sleigh riding and then I took some pics around town. Before I show you all those pics though, lets get some awesome Atomic Robo news out there for you to enjoy.
Wowzers, we made another “Best Of” list. The good folks of Newsarama’s Best Shots, (specifically Brendan McGuirk) gave Robo “Best New Character: Atomic Robo Brian Clevinger (w) Scott Wegener (a): I can’t wait to know you forever. With a simple, iconic design, and a delightful, whimsical tone, Robo feels like he’s in it for the long haul. Comics are the only place robots can destroy Wonders of the World, or giant ants, or zombies. And so they should. The dialogue remains genuinely funny, never falling flat, while the situations are consistently ridiculous enough to maintain interest. So listen, Red5 Comics, I want my Atomic Robo action figures, Atomic Robo lunchboxes, Atomic Robo bedsheets, and Atomic Robo Ointments, and I want them now.”
Bring on the ointments!!!
New Hampshire Magazine gave me a ring a couple of weeks ago. Erica Thoits was a pleasure to talk with.
Rack Raids gave us a lovely 4.5 out of 5 Vikings for Atomic Robo #3. I love a good Viking based scale. Also over at the Rack, Max Patterson gave us #2 for his Top 5 Best New Series of 2007. “A beautiful marriage of Indiana Jones-esque pulp and B-movie science fiction, this is a series that puts the fun back in gratuitous violence. . .Simple and bold, this is a comic stripped to its bare essentials and polished to perfection. I can’t say this comic is better than the sum of its parts, because none of its parts are lacking; this is comic making at its finest, and my only real complaint is that it isn’t an ongoing series.” -If only everyone would read our blogs they would know that Robo IS an ongoing series.
In just a few more weeks my birthday will be here, and I already know exactly what I want. My face painted into a Chinese propaganda poster. What more could a boy want?
RANDOME SPLENDOR
These two come from my old friend Tetsubo.
Website does not lie. It IS “total frickin’ awesomeness from Olan Mills, Sears, and other fine portrait studios.”
You can never have enough Angst Ridden Goths.
Okay, now for my magical winter wonderland picture tour of downtown Wilton NH.
Starting in out little backyard you can get an idea of how much snow has been dumped on us in the past few weeks. That pink think on the left is the scarf Widget and I put on our snowman 2 weeks ago. Its totally buried.

Home sweet OhMyGodPaintMe! Home. I took this pic about 15 minutes after cleaning off the cars. They’re not looking so clean, are they?

If you hang a right out of my driveway you are looking at the South end of the Main Street “business district”. The building in the distance is the US Post Office. It more or less marks the beginning of “downtown”.

Across the street from the building with the green barn doors above, is what I call “Oh Shit Scary Road.” Even when there is no snow driving down this hill makes my butt pucker. You can’t see what’s coming down Main St. from either direction so you just have to step on the gas and hope for the best.

Okay, so now we’re at the Post Office looking North up Main Street. As you can see, I live in the middle of fucking nowhere. Its like a bad postcard populated by hillbillies and strange ladies in boiled wool coats who are full-time “artists”.
Seriously though, while I would prefer to live in Boston, Seattle, or most of all Edinburgh, I really love Wilton. If you’re going to live in a small town, this place is ideal.

This is Town Hall. It is basically the only building on the East side of Main Street. It is a beautiful old building and best of all it contains the town movie theater. There are only two screens and they are super low-tech, but its wonderful. Tickets are cheap and in the “big” room it feels like you are sitting in the audience of the Muppet Theater.

There is a strange little gap in the storefronts of Main St. where in better weather they hold a weekly farmer’s market. I love the old railroad bridge and mill building in the background. The center of Wilton had a lot of neat little places to explore like those. . .when your not in the middle of a blizzard.

And then the towering superstructures of downtown begin again
These are the Mud People. (The Christmas tree is just out of frame to the left.) A local artist put chalk outlines on the building then slapped on half a foot of some mud and hay mixture.

I figured it would wash off in the first big rain. They have been there for a few months I think.

A shot from Town Hall, looking South, back towards my house.

And another shot of Town Hall.

The last building on the West side of Main Street is a small converted mill building. Maybe its not really part of the Main Street buildings though, since the Souhegan river is sort of between it and the street.

Main Street just ends in a confusing Y-interesection. If you turn left a small bridge takes you over the Souhegan. . .

And up Burns Hill Road. Another fun one to try operating a car on in even slightly snowy conditions. This photo doesn’t show it but the first part of the hill there is easily a 20 or 30 degree slope.

On the North side of the bridge, looking at the river.

And the other half of the small waterfall.

As you can see there’s not much going on beyond the little bridge.

And that’s all I got.

Happy Nude Rear Scott! Glad you provided those pics of Wilton. I had my doubts that it was even a real place. Glad to see Robo is getting even more great reviews. When does Robo #4 and PWJ come out? Can we get a sneak peek at a panel or two from the next Punisher issue?

Hey, at least you have off street parking. I get to have the city plow my car in every darn storm…

Wow….yeah, I’m out in CA and after seeing all that, I feel like a big pussy now for complaining about how cold it is here…
Congrats on all the Robo Buzz, man.
Do you or Brian have any more copies available? (or know who does?) I was trying to pick up issues 1&2 for my buddy (for Christmas) and never had any luck.

Yeah all this friggin snow blows and tomorrow is supposed to be effing freezing meaning me and my sidekick are stuck inside all day. Wheee!!!
Mattcrap we have some copies of Robo #1 (first print and second) and 2 at my store, Double Midnight Comics. Let me know if you need a hookup.
Scott nice write up in NH Magazine. My mother-in-law gave me her copy telling me we were mentioned in there. She neglected to mention there was a big ass Robo article in there. Selective reading at it’s finest!

Serious congrats on all the love that Robo is getting. Well deserved, well deserved.
Sorry about all the snow that’s hitting you. Down here in the Boston area we’ve lucked out and not gotten hit with much since those first three storms in one week and got quite a bit of melting so all the sidewalks - even the ones the lazy good for nothings never even shoveled - are clear now.
As for those Sears pictures, I hurt my sides laughing at the “Dawn and her recently exhumed sister, Gorgotha, pose with Scraps” one.
I always get a good laugh when I visit here.
Thanks and Happy New Year.

Nice Wilton pix, Scott. I’ve lived in NH for my entire life and never heard of the place until you mentioned living there. Thanks for proving you weren’t just making it up…

I finally tracked down some preview pages of PWJ #15. See for yourselves: http://www.marvel.com/news/comics.2063.Marvel_Safari%3A_Punisher_War_Journal
The artwork is even better than issue #14. Pure bloody action. That poor monkey! Can’t wait for 1/9/08 to grab a few copies. Job well done Scott!
January 5th, 2008 at 2:19 am
P.S. Those ‘tards at Marvel still have Corey Walker listed as doing the art for the interior of the book. WTF?!!!

Dan: I’m not losing sleep over it.
John: I’m not losing sleep over it.

Glad that Marvel’s goof isn’t affecting your sleep:) Double Midnight doesn’t seem to know when Robo #4 comes out. Can you enlighten me? I picked up the reprint of issue #1. I have to say that I love your cover better than the original one. When is the poster coming out? I’m looking forward to receiving my Robo shirt in the mail. I’m thrilled to become a human billboard for Atomic Robo so I can win you even more fans! PWJ on 1/9/08. Woo-hoo!
