Better Than Aquaman

Better Than Aquaman

I just get a kick out of saying that. A major comic book store in NYC was proud to tell us when we asked how Robo was doing in their stores that it was selling better than Aquaman.

Granted, that’s a pretty low bar to jump.

In fact I’ve heard from 3 stores now that Robo is selling better than all their Image titles. But that only tells me that not nearly enough people are reading Invincible. (Because they are too busy following the exciting adventures of Aquaman I guess.)

Oh hai, Atomic Robo #4 NOV07 3787.

Finally a review with a little meat on its bones! Though at first I didn’t think Atomic Comics liked Robo. But I . . did he? Crap. Anyway, I really like how he scanned panels out of his comic instead of using the 4 pages authorized by Red5. lol Its not the most exciting review. But its all I got folks.

Anyone know any decent comic book websites that might want to throw some attention our way?

I know I’ve talked about POPGUN on the blog before, but its out this week. Here’s a bunch of links so you can see how amazing it is and then run out and buy it.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. We continued a tradition started with my friends way back in college which involved not traveling hundreds of miles to see our families during the worst travel week of the year. It never hurt that none of us had any particular desire to actually see our families because we were too busy being young and hip. But now we have our own stupid families and we even started importing some of the old relatives just to spice things up.

This year was a major triumph for me. Last year I attempted to bake my first ever pumpkin pie. I even made the crusts from scratch. Because that’s how I roll.

Unfortunately for me and everyone else, I forgot to add any sugar to the pies. So instead of pumpkin pie we had ass-pie.

This year there was sugar, and I was redeemed.

Of course the retardo malls have all been in Christmas mode since early October. If there is a shopping equivalent to premature ejaculation this is it. Its worse than the freaking Democratic presidential hopefuls.

I keep getting kids at my door asking if I will support this one or that one and I keep telling them to come back in like a year when I can maybe give a shit.

This X-mas season we are participating in the Heifer Project. Because frankly, the rampant and mindless consumerism of Christmas has officially blown our little minds.

RANDOM SPLENDOR:

This is pretty cool. Okay. Its downright amazing. Sarcos’s Exoskeleton. (Thanks Tetsubo for finding this one!)

The 40 Worst Drawings. Believe it or not, I have a policy of never ragging on fellow artist. You could be the worst artists on your block and if you show me your stuff I will find something positive to say. But since this guy is nothing like an artist in any sense of the word . . .

Why yes I was just at a comic book convention last week . . .

(BTW, someecards.com is the best website on Earth.)

Wow. Those panels really do suck. I can’t draw unless I use graph paper and I think I could do a better job…

    yeahhhhhh dune sand worm lolcat!

It was nice to see you at the Big Apple Con. I must say, you look more tired than I remember. AR is beautiful though, it has paid off.

Selling better than aqua man is no small feat. it takes a lot to sell out the big guys…

    ps: Ass-pie is deliciooooooooooous….

  3. marion Said:

so this year you had sweetass-pie?

  4. Scott Said:

I serve up smartass-pie daily and jackass-pie on the weekends. (que comment from Tetsubo.)

Naomi -I am tired beyond words. 7 weeks now of 10-16hr days, 6 or 7 days a week. But I’ve only got 6 more pages of PWJ to go. Then I will rest.

NYC was sort of a break. It was mentally relaxing but the hours were just as bad.

Congrats on Robo selling out everywhere, including our very own Double Midnight (those guys need to order more copies of each issue!) I agree, Rob Liefeld is a giant, hairy, infected mole on the face of the comics industry. I remember seeing that Levis commercial and thinking back then that his stuff was awful. Amazing how some guys with zero talent can prosper at sucking while great artists toil in obscurity for years. I’m no Jack Kirby (or Scott Wegener,) but I can draw feet!

  6. Scott Said:

Well in all honesty, when I was 16 I though Leifeld was the shit. I remember getting pissed when Mignola filled in on X-Force #10 for him LOL

But what is the only X-book I still own?

    X-Force #10. So I learned.

Also, one has to look at the state of comics during the height of Rob’s popularity. They pretty much sucked. I was just beginning to look at superheroes when he was doing his work for Marvel (as was Jim Lee, Mark Silvestri, and the rest of the founding Image crew).

I experimented with stuff like Avengers, Captain America, etc. and found that in comparison to the work of the future Image dudes they were outdated, goofy looking, and just un-fun to read.

I faithfully followed those artists I loved to Image Comics, and in about 3 more months I learned another hard truth about comics.

Artists tent to make really horrible writers. And redressing Marvel and DC superheroes in shiny new Image costumes is lame.

My love affair with superheroes lasted about 10 months. My love of Leifeld lasted about 6 weeks (in which time I’d caught up on most of his Marvel work. It was akin to my more recent experience with The Phantom Menace. For some time I was blow away by the fact that it was just there. And it was Star Wars. It was weeks into the thing that I sobered up and realized what a steaming pile of shit it was. So at first I was blinked by Rob’s pouches and wrinkly faced (they were mezmerizing) and then I woke up.

The destruction of my childhood (officially titled the Star Wars Prequels) is ironic since I now work with a bunch of Star Wars geeks at Red 5 . . .

Anyhoo, Leifeld is to comics what the Holocaust is to White Power Survivalists. He will be denied and denied until we are blue in the face, yet hundreds of thousands of us ignored his crimes against art and bought his stuff. There is some sort of collective guilt and shame that makes us hate his work even more.

I’ve never understood the Leifeld bashing I’ve seen and heard around, but I was taking a break from comics during his reign (only buying Cerebus and the Kitchen Sink Spirit reprints).
    But that site is funny!
Any I do see tons to complain about, but some of the same complaints I’d also say about Mark Bagley, who currently garners much respect…

Congrats on out swimming Aquaman! Very well deserved indeed.

  8. Scott Said:

    Yeah, Bagley . . . no comment.

  9. Crispy Said:

I too was a Liefeld devotee, I think I was in high school at the time and I had no idea about anatomy, apparently neither did Rob. I mean how did those women support those giant boobs with those tiny waists and distorted backs?

Word on the street is that Robo is doing really well all over the place! We got caught with our pants down on issue #2, we’ve since pulled them up and will have plenty of copies of the rest of the series as well as Punisher War Journal!

  10. John Said:

Crispy: Glad to hear you’ve pulled your pants back up and will be up to your navel in Wegener goodness. Can’t wait for Robo #3 and PWJ!

Scott: When/where is your next local appearance?

  11. Scott Said:

Crispy -I wish I could help you out, but after Big Apple we only had 5 copies left. Jim Hanley’s and some other store in Jersey bought a crap load.

Oh got the FCBD email -will respond soon. Seriously.

John -Dec 15 at some place in Mass that I can’t remember. I’ll post the info in a blog when it gets closer.

  12. Brian M. Said:

Scott, great news about the sale on AR. As with Todd and Craig’s Perhapanauts, AR was a concept I liked from the moment I heard the name. Picked up issue No. 3 yesterday and looking forward to reading it.

As for Bagley, whew, I thought I was the only one who didn’t “get” it.

  13. Chasing Said:

I read the “40 Worst Drawings” thing… and cackled my ass off for the last hour or so. Like, laughed so hard my butt jiggled like Jell-O even though I was sitting. Seriously.
Just found your page while trying to figure out WTH (’scuse the acronym, more happy = more obscene) steampunk was, and your comic seems pretty cool. I’ll snag a copy if I ever see one. :D
