Pre-Order Robo #2!

Did I mention that you can now pre-order Atomic Robo #2? Diamond order code SEPT07 3914.

You can order Atomic Robo by filling out this form and bringing it to your local comic shop. Or, you can purchase Atomic Robo on-line at Things From Another World, Badger Comics, Discount Comic Book Services, Perpetual Comics, Mail Order Comics, and many more fine interweb retailers.

Okay folks, consider this next week’s blog coming to you like an early Christmas present. In less that 12 hours I’ll be on a plane to Baltimore for four days of conventions. As usual I’ve got mixed feelings about going.

I just just just woke up from a nap and have to pack my clothes, sketchbooks, art supplies etc. So this will be pretty straight forward.

My boys at Variant Edition had a chance to review Atomic Robo #1. I know some of you have short attention spans so if you must fast forward, go to about 12:30 minutes and you’ll see it. I’ve been talking to these guys at shows since I started this gig, and they are just a great bunch. Super friendly, and they love what they do.

Introducing Red5 Comics (Newsarama) Wherein Red5 guys talk about Star Wars and. . . oh yeah, and some comics they made. :P

And now Newsarama is running our solicitation from Previews. We got some mixed reviews from the comic book fans last I looked. But opinions are like assholes, right?

For the record –it is possible at first glance to look at Atomic Robo and see a derivative version of Hellboy. I can assure you that the similarities pretty much end with my art, which is clearly influenced by Mignola, but just as clearly influenced by other people as well.

Its true that both books are playing off the old pulp adventures from the pre-superhero days, but so have dozens and dozens of other books. I mean, is Hellboy a derivative of Indiana Jones? Both involve a protagonist who gets beat up a lot, hates Nazis, and solves his problems with violence.

The big difference though is in the tone of the books. HB is a beautiful and melancholy work of art. Its about the breaking down of the system and the failures of Man and his technology. Its also about a lot of other stuff to, but that always sticks at the front of my mind. Its also a very backwards looking book, back in time, back to the myths, etc.

Atomic Robo is the exact opposite. Its tone harkens back to the optimism and forward-looking mentality of a late 19th Century and early 20th Century people, when designers and science dreamed of cities of the future with sliding sidewalks and George Jetson cars. Its got an optimism and a faith in Man and his technology –Robo being a very blatant expression of that.

If you guys could see the stories and background work that Brian has put into Robo you would be blown away. And if things go well, eventually you will see all of that.

Anyway, thanks for listening. You saved me from making an ass of myself on a public news forum. LOL

Okay, I’m out of here.
