More Atomic Robo Reviews

So I’m really happy with the reviews Atomic Robo has been getting. As anyone who knows me well can tell you, I’m pretty insecure and a tad neurotic. This obnoxious, aggressive persona that I put on to make the blog seem semi-interesting is little more than an act. So when I get positive feedback about my work it’s a HUGE deal for me.

I’ve been loving the good reception Atomic Robo has been getting and it makes me very happy to see tons of praise heaped on Monsieur Bœuf la Téte because he absolutely deserves it. But it was nice to finally be thrown a cookie of my own.

Matthew McLean of SBCB had this to say about it: “The art is somewhat reminiscent of Hellboy, but with a cleaner look and sharper lines. It’s definitely professional and damn pretty to look at. However, the team behind Atomic Robo also knows how to use negative space very effectively. Rather than relying on a constant barrage of images, the art will often use the absence of something to make the reveal (when it happens) all the more interesting. Not an easy trick and it is well-played here.”

And Qais Fulton commented: “The art for the book is reminiscent of The Amazing Screw-On Head and matches the pace set by Clevinger’s wry humor brilliantly. You can almost see the confusion and exasperation intoned by Robo etched in his metallic visage. No mean feat for a character who’s only method of emoting sans speech are two blue lights. I love art like this, art that manages to be expressive without looking cluttered or overly busy. Praise be to Scott Wegener for not following the stereotypical comic book art trend that could so easily have been used for Atomic Robo.”

Since both those books mentioned were done by easily my biggest influence EVAR, Mike Mignola, I’m pretty well tickled about it all. More than that I’m glad these guys can see that Mignola influences me, but don’t seem to feel like I am trying to draw like him.

Team Robo got another glowing (though brief) review from Matt Brady over at Newsarama. “Wow…I really liked this book. It was pure fun, something often lacking in comics today. It’s filled with action, adventure, and snappy dialog. Who doesn’t love a smart-ass robot! As mentioned, the story and art are well entrenched in the look of old pulps and comics of the 30’s. Even Atomic Robo’s look conjures up images of those great Sci-Fi pulp covers. The Nazis are suitably evil, not to mention a little bit dense. Stan Lee would love this book! It even has a cliffhanger ending which rounds the book out perfectly.

The book is written by Brian Clevinger with gorgeous nostalgic artwork by Scott Wegener. Red 5 Comics is one company to keep an eye out for!”

Thank god that monster wears diapers.

This blog’s Random Splendor was particularly funny. My sides are still hurting from that first one! Love the title page from Robo–and your colorist kicks serious ass. October seems so far away. Do you have any bootleg copies I can purchase of issue #1 at a highly inflated dollar amount? How about a trade for my spleen?

  3. Crispy Said:

Damn Scott, if I had known John was willing to trade a spleen for an early copy of the book I wouldn’t have given you mine! I need a spleen for my monster, I mean my collection.

  4. Scott Said:

Sorry John I don’t even have the copy “Crispy” gave me anymore.

I sent it along with copies of my sketchbooks to Cape Cod with my wife. For some awesome reason this writer’s workshop she attends every year for poets, novelists, fiction writers, etc. is having Peter David as a teacher.

I assume he is teach comics?

The Director of the program called and tried to get me to go down (in fact she all but reached through the phone and dragged me there). But I’ve GOT to finish KOD3 by Sunday.

So no fun trips for me. :(

Glad to see all the good reviews. I have a good number of people lined up that are very interested in Robo; and just so you know I got the pre-order in to Hanley’s so I’ll have a little stack to go around when it hits the shelves. Talk to you soon.
