PittCon After Action Report
Ow, fuck. My liver.
:::::End of report:::::
I woke up this morning in a bathtub full of ice with a new scar and a letter from Chinese organ harvesters saying that they removed my liver for sale on the black market, but had put it back when they saw the condition it was in.
This was hands-down the best show I have ever been to. If you weren’t there then all I can say is -it sucks to be you!
The crowd was awesome, the venue was crammed with great artists and venders, and the staff was phenomenal. They even went so far as feed us lunch each day and hosted an open-bar party in one of the hotel penthouses for the artists and other vendors each night –hence my current state of disrepair.
Had a great time hanging with Oeming and a bunch of the gang from his forum, and my good friend Jason was able to come up from his new home in Ohio (formerly Brooklyn) to play for a few days. Met loads of new people and sold enough pages, sketches, shirts, and sketchbooks to call the whole affair a success.
PittCon ran this great event each day called the “quick sketch†where artists sat up on a stage with giant pads of paper and drew whatever madness the crowd shouted at us. The results where then raffled off to raise money for the CBLDF. I was told we raised nearly $2000 from the 3 sessions held.
The most exciting part of the Con was getting stuck in a hotel elevator. We packed far too many people in and got stuck between floors for about ten minutes –which felt like a small eternity. Neil Vokes declared that he wasn’t going out crying like a little girl and if we did fall he was fucking something –anything! Since there was only one woman in the elevator with us (and she was with her very large husband), Vokes started giving me the hairly eyeball.
Oeming was curled up on the floor in the fetal position, clutching a bottle of merlot like it was his lifeline to salvation. I tried to calm him down a bit by explaining how elevators couldn’t plummet into the sub-basement because they all had these gravity activated brakes and at worst we would just have to eat someone to survive if the rescue took more than a few days.
Zeke, the very large and scary (to those who don’t know him) husband I mentioned decided that he was going to float across the elevator and kick my ass if it turned out I was wrong. I think that we were packed in so tight that no one would have moved an inch even in a freefall.
Got the Widget an Ugly Doll, just like I do at every show I can find them at.
Okay, the 3 day hang-over is wiping me out so I’m done.

Picture time!
Zombie Pope from the Quick Sketch

The Monarch and his crew. These guys were great, but if Dr. Girlfriend’s dress had been any shorter the entire room would have felt like her gynocological staff. Luckily for her (and happily for me) she had the legs to pull this costume off.

The Widget drew this awesome pic for me, and I turned it into a t-shirt to wear to the con.

This kid was the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time! She won second place in the costume contest for her Spark Plug outfit. Her sister won first for an amazing Godzilla suit that she and her mom made.

Rob Reilly gives the secret signal to move in on the open bar.

One of the sketchs I did -I wish I’d taken pics of all of them! Hellboy vs Atomic Robo!!

Another sketch of a really nice young lade I met who wanted to be drawn with a robot. So there she is -Renfair Girl and Robot.

This was one of many quick sketches I did: Sasquatch vs the power Rangers. Reilly’s Captain America to the right.

You’ve seen Snakes on a Plane? This is Geeks in an Elevator.

Happy to be alive! let the asshattery begin!

They had to post a sign after we broke the elevator.

Dinner in the wake of (and in preparation for another) night of sensless drunkery. Left to right is Rob, Jason (illegitimate love child of Stanley Kubrick), and the Italian Love machine known as John.

At the Quick Sketch. Clowns to the left of me . . .

Joker to the right . . .

My favorite Sketch of the show: Viking vs Triceratop. The couple who bought this were great, and not because they kept coming back to my table and buying stuff after I drew Joseph “Creepy Uncle Joe” Stalin in a pair of nasty skivs at the quick sketch. I REALLY wish I had a pic of that! This pair was the sort of hip nerdster that I LOVE to meet. They were funny, seemed a really nice match for each other, and were totally cracked. I hope to meet them again some day.

Damn. That’s a good time.

Tisk tisk! No photos of the funny Prof X sketch?
Hope you liked it at least.
April 30th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
. . .I know I was pretty messed up, but I don’t think I did a Professor X sketch.
I did a Santa vs Pac Man though.
April 30th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Hah, hopefully the people who bought these sketches from you will take pictues of them and send them your way.
April 30th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
That would be nice.
I’m surprised at how well the digital pics came out.

Looks like a slamming good time was had by all and that Neil Vokes is one funny bashtard.

LMAO!!! The Widget is so frickin’ cool. I remember back in the day when you were first approaching dadhood. Did you ever in your wildest dreams picture something as cool as that drawing? “The Wegeners”, as interpreted via the context of Skeletor. It’s like something out of a Metallica album cover.
Maybe I want *that* T-shirt instead of Atomic Robo Gear (TM).
April 30th, 2007 at 9:47 pm
Hey, this is the “hip nerdster” who had you draw the viking v dinosaur (I’ll scan that later this week for you…) but we have a pic of the Stalin too, so I’ll send that along as well. Glad to hear you had a great show, hope to see you around Boston sometime. Later.
April 30th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
ah, Chris Moreno. Great artist.
I didn’t get to go like I so hoped for. I have been sick with the flu for 2 weeks straight. kinds sucks.
I have an ugly doll. Full of fun and stuffing! I know the widget must love that!

The Wideget rocks, no doubt! And Brand, you’re the second person to say that about the “Wegeners” shirt. Maybe I will have to make some of those . . .
Vokes is definitely one cool cat.
Naomi: sick = suck
Woo-Hoo for Stalin scans! Alec, meeting you and Michaela (spelling?) was one of the highlights of my weekend. You guys are great! When you send me those scans I’ll email you back with the info for the various small Boston shows. Does RI do any?

Told ya I read your blog. Just wanted to check in and see what you’re up to–looks like quite a bit. Sorry for the long-winded/mushy email. I’ll try to get over not getting a response (sniff, sniff) Sketches from the ‘Con kick major booty! Keep up the great work Scott. Later…
May 1st, 2007 at 2:52 pm
Hey John! Yeah sorry about the email. My Inbox has about 60 “important” things in it right now that deem more than a 3 word response. Yours is in that pile.
You should hear from me by May.
May 1st, 2007 at 3:33 pm
Thanks for the reply. I wish I was that swamped with emails. Must be all that enviable “fan-love.” By the way, you going to be at GraniteCon on 5/20? Look forward to hearing from you soon!
May 2nd, 2007 at 7:40 am
Yeah I’ll be at GraniteCon -looking forward to doing a show that doesn’t involve hotel and airfair.
May 2nd, 2007 at 11:41 am
JokerS to the right!
I hope you hung out with Moreno, too. He’s a hoot. Can’t wait to finally meet him in person. Save up for San Diego already, you know the KOD Krew needs to be there in force.
May 2nd, 2007 at 2:43 pm
As the aforementioned “cool cat”,i’d like to say that Mr Wegener has a certain frosty felineness as well-good times,my friend-good times ;o)
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:34 pm
Tom -wish I could be there
I have this whole stupid “must profit to justify a show” thing. Otherwise I can’t afford the next show, or the next.
Neil Vokes ladies & gentlemen! Neil is an artistic god. (thems was good times -what i can remeber of them. Can’t wait for Baltimore.)

Not to mention that they are cutting back the space for artist alley at San Diego this year. I wonder how many years it will be before they rename it “Entertainment-Con”
