Boston Comic Convention Report
To say that the bathroom at the Boston Comic Convention was the highlight of the show would not be a misstep, nor would it be a dig against the show itself. The Boston show was absolutely fantastic. The Back Bay Event Center was gorgeous, the people putting on the show very helpful, and the place was packed most of the day and still fairly busy as we started to wrap things up.
But the bathroom, oh Jesus the bathroom. Plush carpets, comfy benches, and warm towels –and that was just in the lounge leading to the shiter! God Bless America.
I was really impressed and delighted with the crowd. I saw a few people I recognized from other shows, but in general it was all fresh faces, and most of them college aged. Pay attention other convention guys. This is what happens when you actually advertise, and not just in the local moldy comic shop, but in all the major colleges, the local alternative press, and places like Newbury Comics, etc. You get fresh blood! What a fucking concept.
I just about sold out of Atomic Robo sketchbooks, and talked to so many people about Atomic Robo, Red 5 Comics, and junk culture in general that it took me all day to do two simple sketches that would normally have taken a little more than an hour. I feel horrible about having to mail the second one to the nice guy who bought it, (he had to leave before I was finished), but I was tickled pinker than usual to have people pouring through my work, asking questions, and giving my well polished Robo-Speech.
I’ll have the pencils done for ROBO #6 this week. Its been flying by. You all better buy Robo, and lots of Robo, so that nice Brian Clevinger guy can pay me to draw a second mini-series. I will be seriously mad at all of you if that doesn’t happen. ;P
I watchd a great movie about Chinese stereotypes called A Chink In The Armor last week. Very entertaining.
Well, that’s about it I guess. I’ve got to finish Robo now. Here are some pics from the show.
Yeah, that’s right honky, Luke Muthafuckin’ Cage. Swingin’ Seventies style!
I know its totally nerdy, but I LOVE it when folks come in costume. Its like Haloween. And who the hell doesn’t love Haloween? Mr. Frost’s suit had cool little blue lights. I really wanted to touch his head.

Here’s that fabulous bathroom lounge. I was clearly overwhelmed by the emotions of the moment/ I didn’t take pics inside the actual bathroom for obvious reasons. If its not obvious, you should talk to you mom or dad.

Hah, looks like you had a good time bro. I wish I had the ability to go to cons like that. All we go down here is Megacon. The closes after that is in GA.

Yeah, its saying a lot when your table is set up right outside the men’s room and that instead of a smelly distraction, is one of the highligts of the show.
Glad to hear the Atomic Robo sketch books were moving quickly and thanks again for the AR sketch in the back of mine.
It was a great show and it looked to me that the crowd was buying. My money, at least, was flying out of my pocket and was gone a lot faster than is usual for a Boston show. I picked up some nice sketches and a few independent books that I’m looking forward to reading. I hope it was a big enough success to convince Jim, the man behind the show, to take a shot at doing something a little bigger for Boston next time.
Say, did you get a chance to make it over to Craig’s table to say hi before the show ended.

Scott, do not turn this working relationship into a Goofiest Lookin’ Muthafugga Contest. You will be “owned”.

This place is getting kind of crowded, what with all the Brians and all…
Scott, buddy, you’ve *got* to work on your segues:
Right after talking up the bathroom? You had me a little worried.

Segues? No way man, the “I Hate Blaghs Blog” is pure stream of conscience.
(Well, except for the list of links I make to keep track of the junk I want to share.)

What, my bald head isn’t good enough for you?

This was the first time I was exposed to Red 5 and Atomic Robo. Excellent work and I look forward to seeing more!
But how did I miss the bathroom? It’s my own fault for holding off on the sodas til after the show.

We were going to go out for a bite to eat after the show, but instead we just hung out in the bathroom and ordered out for a few pizzas.

You may think Scott is kidding, but he’s not. That bathroom was nicer than any of the restaurants I ate in during the NYC Con.

According to my local comic book store guy, whose chain had a table at the show, all the dealers were very pleased and made money. The guy who ran the show is planing on doing another one in October and is going to try to get on of the big dealers, like Metropolis, to come.
Could be the start of something good for Boston.

Well I hope that things work out for that Brian. Boston could use a nice big show.

Thank you for not taking pics of our bathrooms while they were in use. I’m very happy to hear so many good comments from patrons and vendors alike. You might remember me as the lone chinese person working the event. It was my pleasure have this event held in my space. Looking forward to seeing everyone in October.
FYI… the women’s restroom is nicer than the men’s but you didn’t hear that from me.
